Allan Bridge was an American painter, sculptor and conceptual artist who lived during second half of the 20th century.

In the 1970’s Bridge lived in Washington DC where he was an active participant among the second generation of color field painters. Bridge painted large canvases and experimented with a wide variety of geometric forms.

His paintings were displayed in leading Washington museums and galleries. His work was collected by Gene Baro, the curator of the Corcoran Gallery and Katherine Graham, among others. This is the first exhibit of Bridge’s paintings since 2011.

Bridge began building machine sculptures in the late 1970s and in October,1980 he created the Apology Line, a groundbreaking conceptual art project which used a telephone answering machine to build the world’s first online community. Over the course of the next 15 years, the Apology Line attracted participants from all around the world and received extensive media coverage, including an HBO movie.

Bridge died in August 1995 when he was hit by a jet ski while scuba diving in the Shinnecock Inlet in Southampton. His life and work on the Apology Line were the subject of a seven episode podcast on the Wondery Network in 2021.
